Litgrid sends a third aid package to help rebuild Ukraine’s energy infrastructure

Litgrid, Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator, is sending its third aid package to Ukraine, consisting of an autotransformer and transmission grid equipment. This will help secure electricity supplies and rebuild the country's energy infrastructure damaged during the war.

“We have prepared another aid package for war-torn Ukraine, whose energy infrastructure is being steadily destroyed. In preparation for synchronisation with the continental European grid and modernisation of our country's transmission lines and transformer substations, we are dismantling various substations, line equipment and materials that are no longer used in Litgrid's facilities but are in good condition. We hear from our colleagues in Ukraine that our equipment is immediately installed in the grid and helps to restore the country's electricity system,” says Rokas Masiulis, Litgrid CEO.

Litgrid's aid consists of the main and most expensive substation equipment of the transmission network - the 330/110/10 kV autotransformer, and other equipment of the 330 kV and 110 kV transmission network: disconnectors, compressors, insulators, transformer bushings, relay protection and automation equipment, current and voltage instrument transformers.

The Lithuanian and Ukrainian electricity systems use the same voltage, which are different from those used in many European countries. Therefore, the transformers and other substation equipment provided by Litgrid are suitable for the Ukrainian electricity transmission system.

The market value of the autotransformer, which weighs more than 200 tonnes, is currently estimated at over €4 million. One of these units is enough to provide electricity to the cities of Klaipėda, Panevėžys and Utena combined.

Across all three aid packages, Litgrid has given a total of more than €10 million worth of equipment to Ukraine.

The support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure companies was coordinated and transported with the assistance of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Ukraine and the Ministry of Energy. The aid is directed to Ukraine through the NGO Blue/Yellow.

Litgrid's transport services to Ukraine are covered by the European Union and the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
