Baltic and Polish electricity transmission operators complete dynamic stability study of accelerated synchronisation
The Polish Institute of Power Engineering Gdansk office, together with the Baltic and Polish electricity transmission operators Litgrid, AST, Elering and PSE, has completed a study to assess the technical feasibility of earlier synchronisation with the continental European grid. The results of the study show that synchronisation in February 2025 is technically possible and secure.
In preparation for the synchronisation of the Baltic States with the continental European grid in February 2025, system stability is ensured in all the scenarios considered, according to a study on the stability of the electricity system carried out by the Institute of Power Engineering.
"We received the initial conclusions of the studies in earlier and now the studies have been fully finalised with additional calculations for 2025. Together with the Estonian, Latvian and Polish TSOs, we have consistently and thoroughly analysed the results of the power system stability study. The main message remains the same - synchronisation with the continental European grid in February 2025 is secure," says Rokas Masiulis, CEO of Litgrid.
In August this year, Litgrid, AST and Elering, the electricity transmission system operators of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, signed an agreement on an accelerated synchronisation date. Under the agreement, disconnection (desynchronisation) from the Russian-controlled system and connection (synchronisation) to the continental European grid will take place in February 2025. Until then, the Baltic operators are working on the remaining projects important for synchronisation.
Currently, 7 of synchronisation projects in Lithuania (Expansion of LitPol Link in Alytus, Expansion of Bitėnai transformer substation, Construction of Pagėgiai-Bitėnai 110 kV overhead line and Reconstruction of Lithuanian E-Vilnius 330 kV overhead line, Grid optimisation in North-Eastern Lithuania, Test of emergency assistance to the Lithuanian electricity system from the Polish electricity system via a synchronous interconnector and the Isolated Operation Test of the Lithuanian Electricity System) have already been implemented.
The synchronisation projects implemented by the Baltic and Polish TSOs are co-financed by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility funds.
