New power line being built in Alytus district

Work has started in Alytus district to construct a new overhead power line from Alytus to the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant. With the last construction permits issued last week, the power line’s construction works will begin in the districts of Prienai and Kaišiadorys as well.

“The Alytus-Kruonis power line is vital in ensuring secure electricity exchange between Lithuania and Poland. The power line will help to boost the electricity transmission network in the south-eastern part of Lithuania and ensure the efficient use of the Lithuania-Poland power interconnection LitPol Link. The new power line will also play an important role in planning a second power interconnection with Poland,” said Karolis Sankovski, director of the Strategic Infrastructure Department of the Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid.

The double-circuit 55 km power line will go through the districts of Alytus, Prienai and Kaišiadorys. The power line will start at the Alytus transformer substation near Butkūnai village and go towards the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant in Maisiejūnai village. The power line’s construction works will be simultaneously carried out in all three districts and completed in 2017.

The power line is built by the company A. Žilinskio ir ko, which was awarded a contract by Litgrid through public procurement procedure. The value of the contract is put at EUR 23 million, half of which is financed with EU structural funds.
