Construction of Muša substation

Status: engineering design phase ongoing.

The aim of the project

To strengthen the electricity transmission network of Western Lithuania and ensure its reliable operation by building a 330 kV switchyard Mūša, which is important for the smooth synchronous operation of the Lithuanian electricity system with the electricity networks of continental Europe.

Significance of the project

Synchronisation with the Central European Synchronous Area (CESA)is the last step towards Lithuania’s energy independence. Currently, our electricity system is still dependent on frequency control in Russia, but already in 2025, it will operate in one synchronous area together with the systems of other European countries.

The 330 kV switchyard Mūša is one of the synchronisation projects, which will increase the reliability of supply in the Lithuanian electricity system, as well as ensure higher interconnection capacities for the electricity market with Sweden and Latvia.

Project details
Territory: Joniškis district municipality, Gataučiai eldership.
Voltage: 330 kV
Area: 3.69 ha
Estimated completion date: 2025
Funding: The project is co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

General project information

The Mūša switchyard project includes a 3.69 ha switchyard and 3.4 km of new power lines.

The current connection of the three T-shaped lines is not reliable enough, as their total length is as high as 182 km. This means that in the event of a fault in one place, all three lines are disconnected. The new switchyard will ensure a more reliable electricity supply in Northern Lithuania, as the longest section will be almost three times shorter than now. Currently, the connection is in the area of cultural heritage - the site of the Battle of the Sun. Therefore, the switchyard is planned to be north of this area, and power lines will be brought around the area of cultural heritage protection.
