Tomas Varneckas was elected as the chairman of the board of Litgrid for the second term

Tomas Varneckas, Head of Infrastructure and Project Management at EPSO-G has been elected for a second term as Chairman of the Board of Litgrid, the Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator, at a meeting of the new Board held on Wednesday.

T. Varneckas has been on the Board of Litgrid since April 2022 and was first elected Chairman of the Board in December 2022.

"We are closer than ever to the most important changes in Lithuania's electricity system - we are less than a year away from the synchronisation of the Baltic electricity systems with the continental European grid and the separation from the Russian-controlled electricity system. So, we will focus on implementing the cornerstone synchronisation projects to be fully prepared to take the historic step in 2025. Also, as Lithuania moves towards energy independence, the company's participation in the market for domestic electricity generation from renewable sources will be crucial," said T. Varneckas

From August 2021, T. Varneckas, who leads EPSO-G's Infrastructure Division, is in charge of the Group-wide management of the operation and development of the electricity transmission network and gas transmission system infrastructure, project management and information technology management.

Prior to joining the Group, Mr Varneckas worked for LTG Infra for almost 4 years, where he was responsible for the implementation of infrastructure projects, including Rail Baltica. Prior to that, for more than 17 years, he held the position of Vice President, Project Director, and other positions in engineering UAB Sweco Lietuva. There he actively contributed to the implementation of several infrastructure projects of strategic importance for Lithuania: construction of electricity interconnections, decontamination and dismantling of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, liquefied natural gas terminal and other projects.

On 30 April 2024, Litgrid's Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders elected a new board of directors for the company, including Mindaugas Keizer, Head of EPSO-G, T. Varneckas, and Gediminas Karalius, Adviser to the Ministry of Energy's Energy Security Group.

Tim Meyerjürgens, Chief Executive Officer of the electricity transmission system operator TenneT in the Netherlands and Germany, and Pierre-Henri D'haene, Head of Strategy, Transformation and Sustainability at the Belgian electricity transmission system operator Elia, have been elected as independent members of the Board.
