Scenario Building for the Evolution of Lithuanian Power Sector for 2020 - 2050

DNV GL an international leader in consulting services conducted the study in line with the ambitious National Energy Independence Strategy on Lithuania. The aim of the study is to outline the direction of the energy sector for Lithuania by 2050 in order to know what to expect and be ready for the transformation of the system. The study predicts that by 2050, Lithuania will become a climate-neutral country and 100 percent of electricity will be produced by renewable energy sources. With the gradual increase in the share of RES, the main source of production in 2050 will be offshore wind, which will account for about 40 percent of the RES generation structure, and another 30 percent of the demand will be met by onshore wind and solar energy. However, the construction of a large number of wind and solar power plants will not be enough. We have to provide additional measures for energy storage to always meet consumer needs and avoid huge spikes in wholesale electricity prices.
