Baltic Sea region TSOs to assist Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia synchronise with continental European network

8 December 2023 a meeting of the Baltic Sea region's electricity transmission operators in Stockholm consolidated the region's support and assistance to the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian operators in the process of synchronisation with the continental European grid and discussed the region's most important energy projects.

The meeting also discussed the electricity adequacy situation in the region and the process of cooperation in the preparation of the first Baltic Sea Basin Offshore Network Development Plan (ONDP).

In the Baltic Sea Region, the power adequacy situation has improved this winter compared to 2022-2023, and the risk of power shortages is local and low. The Baltic Sea region TSOs are committed to providing mutual assistance where necessary.

The electricity grid in the three Baltic countries is still synchronous with the Russian and Belarusian systems. The Heads of the Baltic Sea region TSOs jointly express their commitment to assist the Baltic States in this synchronisation process, with a view to synchronising the Baltic grid with the continental European grid by early 2025.

The TSOs of the Baltic Sea region have contributed to the first Offshore Network Development Plan (ONDP) for the Baltic Sea basin, which will be published in January 2024. The TSOs will continue to work together to integrate offshore networks into the planning processes.

The Baltic Sea Operators Meeting is a bi-annual cooperation format between representatives of 8 Baltic Sea Region countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Germany) and Norway as an observer country.

The TSOs in the Baltic Sea region are Estonia's Elering, Latvia's AST, Lithuania's Litgrid, Sweden's Svenska kraftnät, Norway's Statnett, Denmark's Energinet, Finland's Fingrid, Poland's PSE and Germany's 50Hertz.
