Litgrid delivers support to Ukraine for the restoration of its power transmission network

Lithuania’s electricity transmission system operator Litgrid has delivered another package of assistance to Ukraine, consisting of four truckloads of essential power transmission equipment. The support will help strengthen electricity supply in the war-torn country and contribute to the restoration of its damaged energy infrastructure.

“Lithuania consistently supports Ukraine by helping to restore its energy infrastructure damaged by brutal russian attacks. Strengthening and rebuilding Ukraine’s energy system is not only a matter of solidarity, but also of strategic partnership. Lithuania has always stood with Ukraine and always will, especially when it is needed most,” says Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.

The support package from Litgrid includes more than 7,000 glass insulators used in transmission lines and substations. These are vital components of the power grid that separate live parts of the system from grounded structures in substations and transmission lines. Insulators are essential for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the electricity network.

“As we modernise Lithuania’s electricity transmission network, we are able to transfer part of the still fully functional, though no longer used, equipment and materials to our colleagues in Ukraine. This equipment was collected from various locations across Lithuania and has successfully reached Ukraine. We are confident that it will help restore the operation of Ukraine’s power transmission lines and substations more quickly. We are doing everything we can to help bring light and warmth back to Ukrainian cities and homes,” said Rokas Masiulis, CEO of Litgrid.

The power systems of the Baltic States and Ukraine operate at the same high-voltage levels, which differ from those used in most European countries. Therefore, the transmission equipment provided by Litgrid and other Baltic transmission system operators is well-suited for use in Ukraine’s power transmission network.

To date, Litgrid has delivered six support packages to Ukraine, which include four 330/110/10 kV autotransformers and other key transmission system components such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, current and voltage transformers, surge arresters, insulators, relay protection and automation devices, and various other transmission equipment and materials.

The collection and transportation of assistance for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure companies are coordinated in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Ukraine, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania, the European Commission, and Poland’s Strategic Reserves Agency.
