Expansion of LitPol Link in Alytus

Status: project completed.
Project objectives

To prepare the Lithuanian-Polish connection for synchronous operation with the continental European networks, by constructing three auto transformers and auxiliary switchgear in the substation near Alytus.

Significance of the project

Synchronisation with the Central European Synchronous Area (CESA) is the last step towards Lithuania’s energy independence. Currently, our electricity system is still dependent on frequency control in Russia, but already in 2025, it will operate in one synchronous area together with the systems of other European countries.

The connection with Poland running from Alytus to Elk will be modified to enable high voltage AC connectivity with continental Europe, so that power grids of the Baltic States can operate synchronously with the energy systems of other Western European countries and llows the development of a common European electricity market. Through this connection, the Baltic States will operate on the frequency of the continental European synchronous zone.

General project information

It is planned that the interconnection between Lithuania and Poland will be expanded by installing 400/330 kV autotransformers, expanding Alytus 400 kV and 330 kV switchyards, some power lines, and reorganizing the 400 kV switchyard for self-supply needs.

The project is co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) of European Union.
