Public interest services

Public interest services in the power sector are the services which enhance the national energy security and the integration and use of electricity generated from renewable energy sources. The list of the public interest services (PIS), their providers and the service provision procedures are approved by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania or an institution authorised by it having regard to public interests in the power sector. PIS funds are funds paid to the PIS providers.

PIS provided by Litgrid include:
- preparing and implementing of the strategic projects aimed at increasing the energy security (intersystem power links Lithuania-Sweden and Lithuania-Poland; integration of the national power system into European continental network);
- connecting power-generating facilities that use wind, biomass, solar or hydro energy to the transmission grid; optimisation, development and maintenance of the transmission grid when transmission of electricity produced using renewable energy sources is concerned;
- balancing of electricity generated from renewable energy sources.

The PIS funds are allotted according to Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania No 916 of 8 July 2012 “Procedure for the Provision of Public Interest Services in the Power Sector“.
