Litgrid delivers 200-tonne autotransformer to Ukraine

Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator, Litgrid, has delivered a third autotransformer to Ukraine. This equipment will contribute to the restoration and strengthening of Ukraine’s electricity transmission network. A single autotransformer of this capacity is capable of supplying electricity to more than 250,000 people.

"Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is under immense pressure, so every piece of equipment we send is not only a form of technical assistance, but also a symbol of solidarity. The autotransformers we deliver are critically important for ensuring reliable electricity supply under wartime conditions. We are proud to contribute to strengthening Ukraine’s power system – it is part of our shared European responsibility," said Rokas Masiulis, Litgrid CEO.

To date, Litgrid has provided three aid packages to Ukraine, consisting of three hight voltage autotransformers and various other transmission network components. These include disconnectors, compressors, insulators, transformer bushings, relay protection and automation equipment, as well as current and voltage transformers.

The power systems of the Baltic States and Ukraine operate on the same voltage levels, which differ from those used in many other European countries. For this reason, the transformers and substation equipment supplied by Litgrid and other Baltic transmission system operators are particularly valuable and compatible with Ukraine’s grid.

To buy such a transformer on the market today, it would cost over €4.5 million.

This support for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is being coordinated and delivered with the assistance of the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Ukraine, the Ministry of Energy of Lithuania, the European Commission, and Poland’s Strategic Reserves Agency and the non-governmental organisation Blue / Yellow.
