Test of emergency assistance to the Lithuanian electricity system from the Polish electricity system via a synchronous interconnector

Status: the project is completed.
Objective of the project

In preparation for synchronisation with the continental European grid, it is necessary to test the operation of the extended “LitPol Link” electricity interconnector with Poland and to prepare for the eventuality of the need to restore the operation of Lithuania's electricity system after a total blackout, with assistance to be provided to Lithuania through the synchronous link by the Polish transmission system operator PSE.

Significance of the project

During the synchronous emergency response test, a situation was simulated in which, when the major Lithuanian power plants are shut down, electricity is supplied to them from Poland.

The test on 4 December 2021 was the first time in history that part of Lithuania’s electricity system operated synchronously with the Polish system, and with the synchronous area of continental Europe.
