EPSO-G and Litgrid launch a flexibility services calculator

Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid, together with the new energy companies group EPSO-G, has developed and is launching a flexibility services calculator. It will help market participants assess the potential technical and financial benefits of devices providing flexibility services. The tool is expected to encourage participation in the balancing market and help increase balancing market capacity and competition.

"As renewable energy generation grows and as Lithuania and Europe seek to enhance their competitiveness, flexible electricity consumers capable of adjusting their consumption to match surplus generation are becoming essential. Technology and markets today are changing faster than we can accumulate knowledge about their application, making the integration of electricity, heat, and industrial sectors a fundamental condition for the transition to climate-neutral solutions. We see that market participants lack clear tools to help them understand how electrification or sector integration can benefit their businesses. That is precisely what the flexibility services calculator has been created for – it allows users to assess what benefits can be gained from participating in balancing services and wholesale electricity markets," said Paulius Butkus, Strategy Director of the EPSO-G group.

The flexibility services calculator is a publicly available tool designed to help market participants assess the technical and financial benefits of participating in electricity markets: balancing services and wholesale electricity trading markets. The system enables users to calculate potential revenues from providing balancing services to the transmission system operator.

"As the share of renewable electricity in Lithuania's transmission network grows rapidly, so too does the need for balancing capacity. Here lies untapped potential in converting surplus electricity into other forms of energy – heat or hydrogen – or storing it in batteries, whilst simultaneously providing flexibility services. We invite market participants to carry out a swift and straightforward preliminary assessment of potential investments using the new digital platform," said Donatas Matelionis, Head of Litgrid's Power System Operations department.

The calculator is designed to help assess the potential of flexibility technologies, based on historical market data from the past 12 months. In addition, drawing on continuously updated historical data, the tool analyses wholesale electricity price movements and balancing market performance over a selected period. The calculator automatically collects historical balancing market and wholesale electricity price data, as well as meteorological information, before carrying out optimisation calculations for one of four types of flexibility service device: storage units, heat pumps, electrolysis installations, and demand side response. The results are then presented as: visualisation of technical parameters with power profiles and cycles, and calculations of economic indicators including net present value analysis and investment payback period.

The calculator is available for anyone to try at flex.litgrid.eu.

The calculator is currently in BETA version, and its results do not constitute investment advice or a guarantee of future revenues. It is designed to help assess the potential of flexibility technologies based on historical market data from the past 12 months. Before making any investment or implementation decisions, it is recommended that a thorough cost-benefit analysis be carried out or that specialist advice be sought.
