Tender Winner Announced for the Feasibility Study of Baltic States’ Interconnection with European Continental Network

In the beginning of May, Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid is set to sign an agreement with a Swedish company that won the international public tender for a feasibility study regarding the Baltic States’ integration into the EU’s internal electricity market and implementation of possible interconnections. The lowest bid tender for the preparation of the feasibility study was won by the Swedish company Gothia Power AB. A total of three suppliers have submitted their applications for the participation in the tender.

Litgrid Obliged to Implement Activity Separation Plan by 1 October

Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid has been obliged to carry out all the necessary activities in order to implement the provisions of the Law on Electricity regarding the unbundling of electricity transmission activity from the vertically-integrated company group by 1 October 2012. The National Control Commission for Prices and Energy (NCCPE) has indicated that the electricity transmission network operator has to be unbundled according to the requirements of the European Union's Third Energy Package. Litgrid’s controlling interest is currently held by the vertically-integrated group of Visagino Atominė Elektrinė UAB.

TSOs of the Baltic countries to become Nord Pool Spot shareholders

Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) Elering, Augstsprieguma Tīkls and Litgrid have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the purchase of the shares of the Nord Pool Spot, Europe´s largest power exchange. This is a crucial milestone in the implementation of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP).

One of Vilnius' Key Electricity Units Under Reconstruction

Electricity transmission system operator Litgrid has announced the reconstruction of the transformer substation based in the capital city's Viršuliškės district. By November 2012, the substation's facilities will be replaced with new ones. In co-operation with the distribution network operator, the work has been planned to prevent any electricity transmission disruptions for the residents and institutions of Viršuliškės and Karoliniškės wards.

Litgrid Prepares Unbundling Plan

On 30 March 2012, Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid presented the National Control Commission for Prices and Energy (NCCPE) with a detailed action plan for the unbundling of the company from the vertically-integrated company group. It is planned that by 31 December 2012 the activity of Lithuanian electricity transmission operator Litgrid will be split from the vertically-integrated group of Visagino Atominė Elektrinė UAB, which currently holds Litgrid’s controlling interest. The detailed action plan will be published immediately after it is approved by the NCCPE and the Board of Litgrid.

World’s Largest Power Exchange Nord Pool Spot Launches Bidding Area in Lithuania

Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid and Europe’s leading Nordic power exchange Nord Pool Spot signed an agreement in Vilnius today, according to which Nord Pool Spot bidding area will be launched in Lithuania as of 18 June.

In 2011, 65% of electricity consumed came from imported sources

Electricity transmission system operator Litgrid reports that imported electricity accounted for 65% of the total consumption in Lithuania last year. In 2010, Lithuania's reliance on imports stood at 58%.

Public Consultations on European Electricity Transmission Network Development Launched

On 1 March 2012, ENTSO-E, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity, presented its Ten-Year Network Development Plan 2012 (TYNDP). The plan contains the electricity generation and consumption forecasts, descriptions of the key European power infrastructure projects, and market integration plans. Development of renewable energy sources as well as their integration into the power transmission system has been identified as the greatest challenge in the plan.

Litgrid announces interim activity results for 2011

In 2011, Litgrid group reported LTL 434.8 million in revenue. Electricity transmission services generated the major part of the total group revenue (47%). In 2011, the amount of electricity transmitted by the transmission system operator Litgrid AB for domestic needs via high-voltage electricity grids was 9.28 billion kWh, or 0.2% more than the previous year. 8.16 billion kWh, or 0.4% less than in 2010, was transmitted to distribution network operator Lesto AB, while electricity transmission to the other consumers totalled 1.12 billion kWh (an increase of 5.2%).
