Litgrid Reconstructs Electricity Transmission Equipment in Northern Lithuania

In October, the electricity transmission system operator, Litgrid, completed the reconstruction of the Gubernija transformer substation in Šiauliai. The 110 kV switchyard of the Panevėžys transformer substation is to be connected to the electricity transmission grid as well. The company will substantially improve the electricity transmission grid in northern Lithuania by reconstructing the Gubernija and Panevėžys transformer substations.

“The reliability and safety of electricity transmission are the responsibility of the electricity transmission system operator. Therefore, the transmission grid equipment built several decades ago is under constant renovation and is being replaced with new modern equipment. Transmission grid reconstruction and development projects are planned in consideration of the interests of the consumers, and are being implemented so that the consumers do not face any inconvenience,” said Litgrid CEO, Virgilijus Poderys.

The reliable operation of the Gubernija transformer substation is not only important for the Šiauliai-based industrial companies connected to it, but also for the residential development being built nearby. After the reconstruction of the Panevėžys transformer substation is completed in 2014, where new 110 kV units plus a new monitoring and control system have already been installed, the reliability and security of the electricity supply will be improved for local residents.

In H1 of 2012, Litgrid invested LTL 21 million in the reconstruction and development of the national transmission grid. As a result of the efficient organisation of the company’s activities during 2008-2011, the price of electricity transmission went down by as much as 30% across Lithuania and is not going up for its third consecutive year, compared with the 27% increase felt across Europe during the same period.
